For over two decades, the United States has operated under Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) enacted in 2001 and 2002, originally intended to address the immediate threats following the September 11 attacks and the Iraq War. However, these authorizations have since been stretched beyond their original scope, enabling military engagements in numerous countries without explicit Congressional approval. This overreach undermines the constitutional balance of powers and the role of Congress in declaring war.
As a Marine Corps veteran and advocate for responsible governance, I stand with leaders who have consistently called for the repeal of these outdated AUMFs. Senator Paul has argued that the 2001 AUMF has been used to justify a "worldwide war, all the time, everywhere, forever," highlighting the dangers of perpetual military engagement without proper legislative oversight.
Repealing these AUMFs is not about hindering our national defense; rather, it is about ensuring that decisions to engage in military action are made with clear objectives, proper oversight, and in accordance with the Constitution. As Senator Lee has aptly highlighted, risks associated with keeping outdated AUMFs active "create an unnecessary risk of misuse."
It is imperative that Congress reassert its constitutional authority in matters of war and peace. By repealing these outdated authorizations, we can prevent unchecked executive power, ensure that military actions reflect the will of the people, and uphold the principles upon which our nation was founded.
I urge my fellow citizens and legislators to support the repeal of the 2001 and 2002 AUMFs and to engage in a thoughtful, deliberate process when considering future military engagements. This is not only a matter of legal necessity but also a moral imperative to ensure that the sacrifices of our service members are made in the pursuit of clearly defined and just objectives.
